At the Top of the Lighthouse…. – father of the groom wedding speech news

Hey everyone! Sorry its been a little while since my last post. I feel horrible! I just started blogging and already had an absence!! The end of last week was crazy and this past weekend we drove all the way to New Jersey for one day for a friend’s wedding. But anyways, I’m excited to get back on the net and write my next post! I love telling people our engagement story, because it was sweet and unique.

Engaged 600x600 At the Top of the Lighthouse....

Currituck Lighthouse Corolla, NC

Dave and I had been together for 5 years and we had been casually talking about marriage for about 2 years. We both knew it was what we wanted. I just figured he wasn’t ready yet. On Sunday February 28th, Dave and I were spending the weekend at my parent’s house like usual. Dave came into my room that morning woke me up and told me I had 5 minutes to get ready. Not explaining much of anything. I was somewhat flustered being that I am not a morning person and usually don’t move fast until I wake up. I threw on some clothes that were hanging on the closest to the door and headed out. Once we got into the car, Dave told me we were going up to Corolla because it was a nice day and he thought it would be a good time to go to the lighthouse.

Once we arrived at the lighthouse, I found it kind of odd that there were no other cars in the parking lot, but I figured it was because people were just sleeping in. We walked up to the lighthouse and a woman was waiting there for us. She unlocked the doors and then advised us she was going to lock the door behind them, since the lighthouse was closed for the season and no one else was allowed to go up. I was a little shocked at this point, since I had no idea it was closed and I couldn’t believe Dave had it opened just for us. At this point, I got really excited since I had only been in the lighthouse once before when it was hot, stuffy and crowded with people. It was very different this time. It was very cold and dark inside. All the displays were covered with plastic and it was so quiet we could hear the wind blowing outside. As we started the climb I realized what a workout it was going to be to get to the top. I wanted to take my time and enjoy the experience of having the lighthouse all to myself, but Dave seemed to be in a rush to get to the top. I just figured it was because Dave has always been the kind that can’t sit still. He likes to get where he is going quickly.

Once we finally reached the top (after having a little trouble getting the door open), we were amazed by how cold it was up there!! However, it was a gorgeous sunny day and we weren’t going to let the wind stop us. We went out on the walkway and I pulled out my camera. I was too involved taking pictures to notice Dave was no longer standing next to me. Once I realized I was standing there all alone, I kind of freaked out. (Full disclosure: I hate heights!)

I called out to him, and when he came back around he was looking at me kind of funny and pulled me close. Then he held out his hand and in it was the ring attached to a string that was tied to his finger. My jaw dropped.  Dave then told me I could have the ring, but it came with a string attached…him. If I remember it correctly, I think I laughed and gave him a kiss. He then got down on one knee and proposed.

As we walked back down the stairs, Dave had to make sure I didn’t fall, since my knees were shaking so badly the whole way down. When we got to the bottom, the woman who had opened the light house was waiting there for us and offered to take a few pictures. It could not have been more perfect. He managed to surprise me and did it in a way that was totally him. He always manages to throw his quirky humor into everything, and I totally love him for  it.

Did anyone else get engaged someplace unique?! Did you know it was coming or were you completely surprised?!

Up next…. Our first task as an engaged couple: booking our photographer!!
