Father of the Groom Wedding Speech – how I got started

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

I always knew that when my son and his fiance decided to get married I would have to write a father of the groom wedding speech, but I never knew how important that speech was going to be! The truth is that I left it for weeks and weeks before I even realised that I was going to have to get down to it and actually write the thing – and to be honest I only really started then because my wife insisted on it.

My advice about that? Don’t make the same mistake I did. Plan ahead if you can and avoid the wedding toast stress!

When you first start pondering your father of the groom speech it can seem like a really daunting challenge. After all, no one likes speaking in public, I know I don’t, but to do it in front of your closest family, friends and new in-laws on your son’s wedding day is just nerve wracking.

As the date got closer and closer I tried to think of an inspirational, charming, hilarious father of the groom’s wedding speech that also captured all the love and emotion of the day and it just wasn’t coming to me. My next plan was to just write whatever popped into my head at random and hope some magic happened.

Trust me there are more efficient ways to plan a father of the groom wedding toast, but I’ve got to be honest that at least this got me started rather than waiting for the perfect speech to somehow fall into my lap.

At first it was difficult, but when I started using speech prompts and guides I soon started to jot down little bits of information about my son and his bride. When we first heard about her, when we first got to meet her, how long they’ve been together, what it means to us to welcome her into our family. It really helped me to put into words just what both my son and his bride meant to my my wife and I and what a joyous day this was.

At such an early stage I found it’s best not to worry about the order or the content of what you’re writing and don’t spend hours trying to come up with the perfect joke or tear jerking moment. The biggest block to getting the perfect wedding speech is never actually starting to write it! So by jotting down my thoughts I was already over the first major hurdle for my father of the groom wedding speech.
